Meditation and More will resume at Sonoma Academy in August 2017!
In the Meditation and More elective for grades 9-12 at Sonoma Academy, students learn many ways to improve focus, memory, mental clarity, and well-being. With evidence-based and traditional contemplative practices, students increase empathy, reduce stress, and cultivate a greater compassion for themselves and others.
We also explore how stress affects the body, identify personal stressors, and learn how to use mindfulness to reduce stress utilizing core concepts from Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Teens (MBSR-T).
We work together with a group of traits called the Mindful Qualities. These include non-judging, non-striving, acceptance, patience, trust, openness, and beginner’s mind. Students have the opportunity to practice with these qualities and report back to the group on how the quality expresses itself in their everyday activities.
During the Spring 2017 session, the practices we shared included mindfulness of thoughts and emotions, walking meditation, body scan, heartfulness, gratitude, mindful breathing, and mindful eating.
